Apple Watch Series 10 and later can detect signs of sleep apnea using the device’s accelerometer to measure wrist movements during sleep. How Sleep Apnea Detection Works

Sleep apnea causes breathing disruptions that change your movement patterns during sleep. The Apple Watch’s accelerometer — already used for activity tracking — detects these subtle movement patterns over time. Apple Watch looks for “breathing disturbances” that occur repeatedly over multiple sleep sessions. The feature requires at least 10 nights of sleep data to establish a pattern.

Apple Watch does not measure oxygen saturation directly for this feature (unlike the blood oxygen sensor used in other contexts). The algorithm is based purely on motion pattern analysis. This means it works consistently regardless of skin tone or ambient temperature.

What You Will See

If Apple Watch detects consistent signs of sleep apnea over multiple nights, the Health app will display a notification: “Signs of Sleep Apnea.” The notification explains what this means and suggests speaking with a healthcare provider. The Health app also shows the history of breathing disturbances with context about frequency and severity.

Apple Watch does not diagnose sleep apnea — it identifies signs that warrant professional evaluation. A formal diagnosis requires a sleep study (polysomnography) at a sleep clinic.

Sleep apnea affects an estimated 25 million adults in the US, the majority undiagnosed. The condition increases risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Most people with sleep apnea do not know they have it because the primary symptom (excessive daytime sleepiness) is easily attributed to other causes.

What to Do If Detected

See your primary care physician. They can refer you for a sleep study. Home sleep apnea tests are increasingly available and covered by insurance — these are simpler than lab-based polysomnography but effective for most cases. Treatment options include CPAP machines, lifestyle changes, oral appliances, and in some cases surgery.
