iPadOS 26: The Update That Could Finally Replace Your Laptop

iPadOS 26, anticipated for June 2026 at WWDC with a fall release, represents Apple’s strongest push yet to position iPad as a legitimate laptop replacement. Here’s what’s coming.

External Display Improvements
iPadOS 26 finally addresses the biggest limitation of using iPad with an external monitor: Stage Manager support for both displays. Currently, when you connect an external display, iPadOS mirrors the screen or offers limited extension. iPadOS 26 brings full desktop-style multi-monitor support with independent Spaces on each display.

This means your MacBook-style workflow becomes fully viable — main iPad screen for your active app, external display for reference material, Notes, or communication apps.

Floating Window Management
A new ‘Floating Windows’ mode allows apps to exist as resizable, draggable windows that layer over your main workspace. Unlike Split View, these float above everything and can be summoned or dismissed instantly. Perfect for keeping a calculator, translation app, or notes panel accessible without disrupting your main workflow.

Pro Apps Get Professional Features
Final Cut Pro for iPad receives a major update with real-time multicam editing support for up to 4K 60fps sources. Logic Pro adds live looping and a redesigned mixer interface optimized for touch. Both apps gain full external storage support with proper file browser integration.

The Files app gains network share access (SMB/CIFS), making iPads practical in office environments with Windows file servers.

Apple Intelligence Deep Integration
iPadOS 26 integrates Apple Intelligence throughout the system. The new ‘Scribe’ feature in Notes can transcribe handwritten notes in real-time, convert them to text, and summarize them. Mail app gains smart Reply that drafts contextually appropriate responses.

Stage Manager Enhancements
Stage Manager gets automatic window grouping by project. Create a ‘Writing Project’ group that includes Pages, Safari (for research), and Notes — then save it as a preset that launches everything at once.

Keyboard and Trackpad
iPadOS 26 improves third-party keyboard support with full shortcut customization. The trackpad experience now matches macOS with proper gesture recognition for dragging, selecting, and window management.

Apple Pencil 3 Support
The rumored Apple Pencil 3 may debut alongside iPadOS 26 with haptic feedback and a find-my-integrated speaker for location tracking.

iPadOS 26 will require iPad Pro 2018 or later, iPad Air 2019 or later, iPad mini 2019 or later, or iPad 2021 or later.
